Emperor Dragonfly

Distribution: Widespread throughout Wiltshire, but more common in the north of the County. Breeds in ponds, lakes, canals and slow flowing rivers.

Identification: The male emperor dragonfly is pretty much unmistakeable hawking over it's territory. A combination of it's large size, blue abdomen (which is slightly downcurved in flight) and lack of any spots on the abdominal segments are diagnostic. The female is similar to the male but has a green abdomen.

County Status: Widespread, Common.
